<p>How are millions of Americans are pre-diabetic and not even know it? </p>



<p>According to the American Diabetes Association, 29.1 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, and another 84 million have prediabetes. Prediabetes is when blood sugar levels are higher than average but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.</p>



<p>These numbers are staggering, especially considering that it&#8217;s estimated that one out of three Americans will develop type 2 diabetes during their lifetime (an estimated 90% of American adults over age 65 have prediabetes). However, many do not even know they are pre-diabetic or that they have chronically high blood sugar levels. The problem is that high blood sugar levels can cause many severe health issues when left untreated over a long period of time, even if you are not clinically diagnosed as &#8220;diabetic.&#8221; <a href="https://controlthespike.com/why-everyone-should-test-their-blood-sugar/">This is why it is important that everyone tests their blood sugar levels. </a></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">High Blood Sugar</h2>



<p>What is high blood sugar?</p>



<p>Blood sugar levels are normally measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Normal fasted blood sugar levels are between 70-100 mg/dL, and the threshold for diabetes is 126 mg/dL. 100-125 mg/dL is considered pre-diabetes. However, ideally you want your fasting blood sugar levels to be under 90 mg/dL for optimal health.  When your blood sugar levels rise above normal levels and remain there for two or more hours, you can develop symptoms like fatigue, hunger, and thirst. All of these symptoms come from the brain&#8217;s signal that it needs the energy to function properly—but if your blood glucose levels are too high, then there isn&#8217;t enough energy available to meet its needs. This is because the glucose is still circulating in your blood stream and is not being utilized by the cells in your body for energy. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Excess Sugar In The Blood</h2>



<p>Blood sugar is glucose that is broken down from carbohydrates that you eat that the body then uses for energy. Excess protein can also be converted to glucose by the body through a process called gluconeogenesis. </p>



<p>Glucose enters your bloodstream after you eat or drink something containing carbohydrates. The glucose then travels through the body to be used by cells, where it&#8217;s converted into energy that helps us move around, think clearly, and keep our organs working properly. This is all done with the help of the pancreas and insulin. However, people who are pre-diabetic or diabetic have a hard time producing enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels within a normal range or their bodies do not utilize insulin properly. When there is not enough insulin present or the body&#8217;s cells are not responding to insulin properly, this causes high blood sugar levels. </p>



<p>High blood sugar levels over time can damage your nerves, blood vessels, and organs which may lead to diabetes complications and other diseases down the road.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Monitoring Blood Sugar Levels Is Important</h2>



<p>Over time, elevated blood sugar levels can lead to serious health problems, such as:</p>

The researchers behind this study found no difference between those with T1D or T2DM who had been diagnosed within five years versus those who had been diagnosed more than five years prior when it came to numbness/tingling in their fingers/toes or other sensory symptoms at baseline. After nine years, though, there was a significant difference. Those diagnosed more than five years prior were much less likely than those recently diagnosed (within 5 yrs) to experience sensory problems such as numbness/tingling in their fingers/toes or other sensory symptoms at follow-up (after 9 yrs).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Symptoms Of High Blood Sugar Levels</h2>



<p>Often times, you will never know if your blood sugar levels are high unless you test them. This is what makes pre-diabetes and diabetes such dangerous conditions. However, when blood sugar levels rise to extremely high levels you may experience the following: </p>

<li><strong>Increased thirst:</strong> High blood sugar levels can cause you to feel thirsty all the time, leading to dehydration and affecting your mood.</li>



<li><strong>Increased hunger:</strong> If you&#8217;re experiencing high blood sugar levels, you&#8217;ll likely have an increased appetite. This can cause weight gain and make it difficult for you to stay within a healthy weight range.</li>



<li><strong>Increased urination:</strong> This symptom is usually caused by the body attempting to rid itself of excess sugar in the blood through urination. </li>

<p>Fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) are tests that measure your blood sugar levels. Both tests can be and are commonly used to determine if you have diabetes or not. Fasting glucose is the measurement of blood sugar after a period of fasting (about 8 hours). HbA1c is a more accurate way to measure blood sugar because it takes into account how long your blood sugar has been high (as opposed to just measuring at one point in time). HbA1c measures your average blood sugar level over an approximately 90 day period. </p>



<p>The two most essential tests for evaluating your blood sugar health are hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and fasting glucose. These tests can help you and your doctor determine if you have diabetes and if you do have diabetes &#8211; how much control you have over your diabetes and how well you manage it. However, the two tests give us some different information so let&#8217;s explore both tests and determine the differences and advantages to each. <a href="https://controlthespike.com/why-everyone-should-test-their-blood-sugar/">It is also vastly important that everyone test their blood sugar whether they are diagnosed with diabetes or not. </a></p>



<p><strong>What is fasting glucose?</strong></p>



<p>Fasting glucose is a blood test that measures your blood sugar levels after fasting for 8-12 hours. It&#8217;s one of the most critical tests in diabetes management and testing, as it indicates your current health status and what type of care you need to prevent further complications. However, a fasting blood glucose test is merely a snapshot in time of what your blood glucose level is at that particular moment. </p>



<p>According to the American Diabetes Association, an increase in fasting glucose can be an early sign that you&#8217;re at risk for developing type 2 diabetes (T2DM). While high fasting glucose isn&#8217;t always indicative of T2DM, it may also indicate other conditions, such as prediabetes or metabolic syndrome.</p>



<p><strong>What is HbA1c?</strong></p>



<p>HbA1c is a measurement of your average blood sugar over the last 3 months (approximately). A lower HbA1c value is better and measures how well your blood sugar has been controlled over the previous 3 months.</p>



<p>It can be calculated from a single test or multiple tests; in either case, it gives you a good idea of how well your treatment works to keep your blood sugar within target ranges. </p>



<p>The American Diabetes Association has suggested that glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) be used instead of fasting blood glucose for diabetes diagnosis. HbA1c is an essential predictor of long-term glycemic management since it might represent the previous two to three months&#8217; cumulative glycemic history. HbA1c is not only a valid indicator of chronic hyperglycemia, but it also corresponds strongly with the risk of long-term diabetic complications. Elevated HbA1c has also been identified as an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke in both diabetic and non-diabetic people. The useful information offered by a single HbA1c test has made it a credible biomarker for diabetes prognosis and diagnosis.</p>

<p>The HbA1c test is a precise and easy-to-use test with on-the-spot results that can be a valuable tool in confirming diabetes diagnosis, particularly in low- and middle-income countries and difficult-to-reach populations. Even though HbA1c has been approved for diabetes diagnosis, several testing methodologies and cutoff limits are still being contested in most countries worldwide. However, combining<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4933534/"> FGT and HbA1c improves the diagnostic accuracy </a>of these independent assays. HbA1c&#8217;s predictive value stems from its unique capacity to measure retrospective glycemic management as well as forecast the lipid profile in diabetes patients.</p>

<p><strong>Which is more important: fasting glucose or HbA1c?</strong></p>



<p>Firstly, it&#8217;s important to understand the difference between fasting glucose and HbA1c. Fasting glucose is a measure of your blood sugar level before you eat, it gives you your blood sugar level at a particular moment in time. HbA1c measures the average blood sugar concentration over the past 3 months.</p>



<p>So which one is more accurate or &#8220;better?&#8221; A recent study compared these two measurements and found that people with fasting glucose above 100 mg/dL had a higher risk of developing diabetes complications than those with an HbA1c below 7.5%. So while both are useful tools when monitoring your diabetes care, if you have an elevated fasting glucose level, it may be time to take action sooner rather than later!</p>



<p>The American Diabetes Association has suggested glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) as a potential alternative to fasting blood glucose for diabetes diagnosis. The ability to indicate the cumulative glycemic history of the previous two to three months makes HbA1c an essential biomarker of long-term glycemic control.</p>



<p><strong>What are the advantages of using the HbA1c test versus the blood glucose test?</strong></p>



<p>The <a href="https://biocoach.io/?rfsn=6936693.083641">HbA1c (or A1C) test</a> requires a small blood volume to be drawn, which evaluates the proportion of red blood cells with glucose molecules attached, indicating the glucose level in the blood. Because red blood cells in any blood sample are a mix of different ages, the HbA1c test provides a &#8220;weighted&#8221; average of blood glucose control over the previous 2-3 months. To detect diabetes, the fasting plasma glucose test measures a person&#8217;s blood glucose level after at least eight hours without food or beverages.</p>



<p>Elizabeth Selvin, Ph.D., MPH,<a href="https://www.diabetesselfmanagement.com/blog/a1c-shows-predictive-advantage/#:~:text=According%20lead%20study%20author%20Elizabeth,before%20the%20test%20is%20performed.%E2%80%9D"> the study&#8217;s</a> principal author, asserts that HbA1c offers important advantages over fasting glucose. The HbA1c test provides superior stability, minimal intraday variability, and values that are unaffected by stress and illness, and the patient is not required to fast before the test.</p>



<p><strong>What is the difference between fasting glucose and HbA1c?</strong></p>



<p>The first thing to know is that fasting glucose and HbA1c are tests for diabetes diagnosis and management. Here&#8217;s a quick breakdown of the difference between the two:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Fasting glucose measures your blood sugar level after fasting for 8 hours (usually overnight). This test can help you determine if you have prediabetes or if you have diabetes. If this number&#8217;s high, it means your body is having trouble processing glucose correctly.</li>



<li>HbA1c measures average blood sugar levels over the last three months—it&#8217;s a more long-term look at how well your body is taking in and using glucose in relation to carbohydrates in your diet.</li>



<li>Fasting glucose measurements are taken after a person has fasted for at least eight hours, while HbA1c is taken after a person has fasted for at least 12 hours.</li>

<p>Diabetes complications can be reduced significantly if diagnosed early and <a href="https://controlthespike.com/10-ways-to-reverse-pre-diabetes-and-type-2-diabetes/">type 2 diabetes can even be reversed with certain lifestyle changes in many cases.</a> Although HbA1c is an accurate predictor of problems, there is little information available about its accuracy in diabetes diagnosis. A <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3075530/">cross-sectional population-based study</a> was used to investigate the relationship between HbA1c and FBS.</p>

That’s right, just walking can mean a world of difference when it comes to your health and longevity.</li><li>Dance classes are a great way to burn calories and have fun simultaneously! If you like being active with others, this is a great choice for getting fit while socializing and having fun! You can join an adult class at your local gym or look online for dance studios that offer beginner lessons during off hours (like an early evening on weekdays).</li><li>Cycling outdoors is another fun way to enjoy nature while burning calories! You can ride through parks or along bicycle paths without having any extra gear other than a helmet—and it doesn&#8217;t have as much impact on joints if done regularly over long periods compared with running distances over larger periods instead (which could cause injury). <li>A waist size over 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women</li>



<li>High triglycerides (blood fats) above 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L)</li>



<li>Low HDL cholesterol (&lt;40 mg/dL in men, &lt;50 mg/dL in women), or high ratio of triglycerides to HDL cholesterol above 4 (men) or 5 (women)</li>



<li>High blood pressure—130/85 mm Hg or higher on two separate occasions, or 135/85 mm Hg if you are age 60 years old or older</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><a></a><strong>You Can Have Normal Glucose Levels and Still Have Insulin Resistance or Elevated Insulin Levels.</strong></h2>



<p>Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your body does not produce enough insulin or does not use the insulin it produces effectively. However, there are other diseases that can cause similar symptoms. Insulin resistance is a precursor to diabetes, but it doesn’t mean you have diabetes yet!</p>



<p>Insulin resistance means that your body produces insulin but does not use it very efficiently. When this happens, your body compensates by producing more and more of its own insulin and eventually this can lead to type 2 diabetes over time as your body will eventually require more and more insulin to achieve the same blood glucose control. Eventually your pancreas will not be able to keep up with this demand and it will burn out. Having high insulin levels chronically can also accelerate the aging process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><a></a><strong>You Can Have Normal A1c Levels Yet Have Fasting Glucose Levels That Are Too High.</strong></h2>



<p>A1c is a measure of how much glucose is in your blood over a period of time. The A1c test measures the percentage of hemoglobin molecules that have been coated with glucose during the life span of red blood cells, which should be about 4 months.</p>



<p>A1c levels can be normal but your fasting glucose levels can still be too high. In this case, you may have “normal” A1cs but high fasting blood sugar levels, indicating insulin resistance and underlying metabolic syndrome (MetS).</p>



<p>In addition to diabetes and insulin resistance, many common diseases are caused by high blood sugar:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)</li>



<li>Cardiovascular disease</li>



<li>Cancer</li>



<li>Fatty liver disease</li>



<li>Erectile dysfunction and dementia.</li>
</ul>



<p>Therefore, all of these conditions should be treated aggressively, just like diabetes is treated aggressively.</p>



<p>And because these conditions are so common, especially in older patients, any time you see a patient over 50 or 60 with elevated glucose levels or insulin resistance, it&#8217;s important that they be tested for all three conditions. If they have one or more of these vascular risk factors (diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol), then they should be treated aggressively just like someone with diabetes is treated aggressively. The treatments include medication and lifestyle changes: losing weight if necessary; exercising regularly; controlling your salt intake; eating healthy foods; avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol in excess.</p>
